What is stuff made of and how does that change? This course aims to help students ask and attempt to answer questions about the materials around us, along with a healthy dose of “hey, let’s light it on fire and see what happens.” Students are pushed to do science for themselves, rather than studying it like a foreign language or the history of a bunch of guys in white lab coats. Topics include but are not even remotely limited to: atoms and molecules, the periodic table, nuclear chemistry, reactions, acids and bases (don’t burn your face off), etc… The pinnacle project of the course is Google Science Fair, in which students choose their own research topics to innovate, invent, or improve something (almost anything) through chemical processes and experimentation.
